Will And The Whisp

Untitled 213.png

“The voice was coming from inside him...But it wasn't his.”

Like any other teenager, Will Devine just wants his life to be normal. But an unfortunate incident in the boy’s toilet has bound Will to a Whisp. And there’s nothing normal about being bound to a spirit from another world.

And now with one teacher dead, hunters lurking in the streets and another student's life on the line, can Will and the Whisp survive long enough to escape from each other?

A thrilling new novel for middle grade readers.

William Soutar Award 2020

Ross MacKay’s poem was The William Soutar 2020 Over-18 award winner. The poem was voted into the shortlist via a public vote and was selected as the winning entry by head judge, Asif Khan who described it as “a wonderful blend of fable and nautical imagery, which was reminiscent of a devotional chaplet for this extraordinary moment in our life and time.”

The full text of the winning poem is below

WE CALLED HIM NOAH

I am on an ark.
Bobbing on the ocean endless
Friends are fathoms far away
Further than the boat shall sway
So alone we sit upon the sea
With only our cat upon my knee

I am on an ark
There is no target destination
The tempest’s time has no duration
Land is promised or talk of it at least.
Talk of it, always talk of it
But the tempest twists and turns the tide
And like a corkscrew we return
And it all begins again
Bobbing on an ocean endless

I am on an ark
Wave after wave
I am on an ark
Peak after peak
I am on an ark
We roll up the sails
And baton down the hatches
But the leviathans jaw has endless snatches
And 45,000 souls
have become coral.

I am on an ark
But the cat on my lap has no interest in procreation
She sees no benefit in the recreation
to start the worlds repopulation.
But my partner has a belly full of hope.
We tether ourselves with love and rope
And pray the storm will pass.

I am on an ark
And I see rainbows everywhere
Painted on windows and submerged pavements
Streaked through sapphire skies

We are on an ark
And my child, new, is in my arms
Tomorrow we will reach the land,
And start the world anew

Who Put Mums & Dads in Charge?

Who put mums and dads in charge? They haven’t thought it through.
When you really think about it, they haven’t got a clue.

They try to tuck you in at night when you’re still wide awake.
Then they try and get you up when its only half past eight.

It’s time to go to sleep. Stop jumping on the bed.
You want another story? But all the books are read!”

They make you munch your vegetables  when you really want a sweet.
Then when your offered cake, “you’ve had too much to eat.”

Their always in a great big rush. Their always in a hurry.
I’ll find my coat eventually. I don’t know why they worry.

“I’ve got an important meeting; I really can’t be late.
What do you mean you’ve forgot your lunch? We’re already at the gate.”

They make you pick your toys up and tidy all the mess,
But then they’re always losing things, so, it doesn’t make any sense.

“Where’s my keys and wallet. Where have I put my phone?
No, I haven’t lost them, they’re somewhere in this home!”

They hate it when you’re dirty. They try to keep you clean.
But I’m only going to school. Not to meet the queen.

A great big giant puddle. Splish and splash and splosh.
It’s really only water, so it’s just like a bath time wash.

Who put mums and dads in charge? They made a huge mistake.
It’s time the kids took over. I think the adults need a break.

Ross is delighted to be one of the final recipients of the Tom McGrath’s Trust Maverick Award. R-Words is a series of poetic chain letters that will blossom this Spring. Using what I have learnt about R-numbers during the pandemic, I want to turn the lethal number into something more beautiful and I will ask members of the community to share little poetic lines with each other as gifts. The project is being produced in partnership with the Edinburgh International Book Festival.
